Location: Coconino County Juvenile Detention Center & County Jail – Flagstaff, Arizona

Contract: 11-Month Certified Position

Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:30 AM – 2:00 PM

Start Date: January 5 2026

Position Overview

The Coconino County Accommodation School District is seeking a dedicated, flexible, and mission driven teacher to serve students ages 13–18 at the Coconino County Juvenile Detention Center, with additional support provided to students ages 18–21 in the Coconino County Jail. This unique teaching role serves some of the county’s most vulnerable youth and young adults, providing both academic instruction and hope for the future.

This is a certified teaching position that requires collaboration with detention officers, ESS staff, and the broader education team to support student success in a secure, structured, and highly individualized learning environment. The position offers professional development, team support, and the opportunity to make a lasting impact on students as they transition back into the community or into other educational programs within our district.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide standards-aligned instruction in core content areas, credit recovery, and life skills
  • Differentiate instruction to meet diverse academic, social-emotional, and behavioral needs
  • Collaborate with the Exceptional Student Services (ESS) team to implement IEPs, 504 Plans, and other support services
  • Use trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and restorative practices to engage learners
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance, academic progress, and communication logs
  • Coordinate with juvenile detention and jail staff to ensure a safe and effective learning environment
  • Support transitions for students moving to other district programs or community placements after release
  • Participate in professional development and district-wide initiatives focused on student equity and success

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Arizona Teaching Certificate (Secondary or Cross-Categorical Special Education preferred)
  • Valid Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card
  • Experience teaching at-risk youth, in alternative education settings, or within a secure care environment
  • Strong classroom management and relationship-building skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Special Education certification or endorsement
  • Experience with credit recovery programs, online learning platforms, or blended instruction
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed care and restorative practices
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English)

Work Environment & Support

  • Primary teaching location is the Coconino County Juvenile Detention Center
    • Occasional instructional services provided to eligible young adults in the County Jail
    • Close collaboration with detention officers, ESS staff, and district administrators
    • Ongoing support from the district’s Exceptional Student Services team
    • Access to meaningful professional development opportunities
