Student Ambassador Progam

Leading the way in the 21st century

Ponderosa High School has the good fortune to host an amazing demonstration sustainability area; an area which houses a self-sustained greenhouse, student meditation circle, outdoor classroom, three water-retention basins, native flora and a 2300 gallon water harvesting system – completely powered by wind and solar. We are also in the process of constructing a 700 square-foot “hoop house” for the growing of vegetables in Flagstaff’s cold-weather climate. Over 90% of the completed and on-going projects have been student designed and constructed in collaboration with Coconino Community College and Northern Arizona University faculty, staff and students, and funded by various grants including the City of Flagstaff, Grand Canyon Trust and the National Forest Service.

With so many projects, activities and opportunities, the need for a full-time and dedicated tour service became glaringly apparent. Thus, the PHS student leadership team also serves as the de facto guide service for our sustainability demonstration area. Fully versed in agriculture, solar, wind and alternative horticulture, students lead small and large groups through the sustainability area – both on short notice and in planned ‘open-house’ occasions.
